Each month a different Club President in Division 15 will host the DCM. The President will run the meeting, including providing for someone to do the Pledge, Song, and Invocation. Also the President's Club will provide food for the meeting, be it either a meal or hors d'oeuvres, and beverages. The President will bring their own Club Banner to the meeting (and guard it from predators…), as well as several raffle prizes each valued at $10 or more.

Introducing 2009-2010 Lt. Governor Elvia

The first time I ever heard of Kiwanis was in my senior year at La Puente High School when I received $150 from the La Puente Kiwanis Club. I thought, what wonderful people believing in me without ever knowing me. I suppose a kind teacher or administrator submitted my information to them. It was not until 2001 when I would hear of Kiwanis again. (My goodness, we certainly are a well kept secret!). By 2002 I became a proud member of the Kiwanis Club of Ontario. What a great group of people working toward the greater good. I did however step out of the room and somehow ended up running the place. (My advice: hold it until after the meeting)

From a very young age I was involved in school governance and community service. Kiwanis just seemed like the next natural step in being able to make a real difference in the lives of young people. There is no mistake in acknowledging that the network of Kiwanians gives our organization the tools and access to truly offer positive opportunities to the children in our areas. We are hands on and can see and feel the emotions that go along with helping a child. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of Kiwanis?

In addition to community service, Kiwanis has given me an extended family that supports me at every turn. My Kiwanis family loves and encourages my children (one son, 20 and one daughter, 16) to not fear challenges and to always excel. It’s like having 30 sets of parents/grand parents rooting you on. I am forever grateful for this blessing. Granted, as in any family unit, things may not always run smoothly, but the goal of making an effective change remains steadfast.

Below is a list of my Kiwanis “highlights” on paper, but know that the service we do is the true reward.

  • 2nd Vice President on Board 2004-2005
  • Distinguished Member 2004-2005
  • Club President 2005-2006
  • Distinguished member 2005-2006
  • Distinguished President 2005-2006
  • Dunlap Fellowship Recipient  Bronze Level 2006
  • Club President 2006-2007
  • Dunlap Fellowship Recipient Silver Level 2007
  • Club Secretary/Treasurer 2007-2008
  • Club President 2008-2009

In addition to Kiwanis, I served on the local Little League board in Ontario from 2002 through 2007 in the capacities of Secretary (1 year), President (4 years), and Player Agent (1 year). I also work closely with the Chaffey High School Renaissance Program promoting success in academics. I am a graduate of La Puente High School and have a B.A. in Liberal Studies/Education, from San Diego State University. My work experience includes several years as a legal assistant/office administrator and Vice President of a small business consulting firm.

Introducing 2009-2010 Division Secretary Greg

Greg Shapton was sponsored into Kiwanis by Don Williams, past President of the Kiwanis Club of Pomona, in April, 1983. He has served as Bulletin Editor, President 1988-89, and Club Secretary of the Pomona Club since 1993.  He has been Kiwanian of the Year twice, and Distinguished Secretary four times.

In addition to Kiwanis, Greg serves on the Board of Claremont Heritage, LA County Fair Pomona Day Committee, Community Partner Advisory Board for the Center for Community Service-Learning at Cal Poly Pomona, and the Masters in Public Administration Advisory Council at Cal Poly Pomona. He is a past member of the Pomona College Alumni Board, and continues to fund raise extensively for the Pomona College Alumni fund. Professionally, he is Library Director at the Pomona Public Library.

Married since 1983 to Barbara Rugeley, they have 3 children, all graduated from college and working full-time! Through their active participation in the Community Friends of International Students at the Claremont Colleges, Greg and Barbara have hosted over 40 international students in their home since 1994. Greg and Barbara love Shakespeare, and have attended all of the summer and fall season plays during the last 11 years at the Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City.  Lovers of theatre, they have had season tickets at the Mark Taper Forum for 33 years, and love to travel to London and Stratford-upon-Avon to attend plays there.

In his 26th year in Kiwanis, Greg has contributed countless hours of service to the Pomona community, and looks forward to serving the Division this year as its Secretary.
